005_The Star by Ann Taylor(1782~1866) and Jane Taylor(1783~1824)

 

 

일요일입니다. 아무 생각없이 편히 쉬시길 바라며 달콤한 동시 한편 소개해 드립니다. 1연은 다잘 아시는 부분이구요. 원래는 5연까지 있는데 (1) 쉬고 싶은 일요일이고 (2) 너무 길어지면 필사가 힘드실 듯 해서 2연까지만 소개합니다.^^ 소리 내어 읽어보실 때는 강약/강약/강약/강으로 읽으시면 입에 착착 붙으실 겁니다.

혹시나 해서 미리 말씀 드리자면, 3연 trav’ller는 traveller, 4연 thro’는 through, 5연에 ‘Tis는 It is, tho’는 though의 줄임말 입니다.

How I wonder what you are!

Up above the world so high,

Like a diamond in the sky.

 

When the blazing sun is gone,

When he nothing shines upon,

Then you show your little light,

Twinkle, twinkle, all the night.

 

반짝 반짝 작은별

그대가 난 얼마나 궁금한지

세상 위 저 높은 곳,

하늘에서 다이아몬드처럼.

 

이글거리던 해가 져서

아무것도 비추지 않을 때면

그대가 작은 빛을 밝히네

반짝 반짝 밤새도록.

 

오늘 소개해 드릴 동영상은 이 시와 뗄래야 뗄 수 없는 모짜르트의 변주곡입니다.

여담으로 이 곡과 프랑스어도 된 원래 가사는 1774년 프랑스에서 출간이 되어, 모짜르트가 파리에 갔을 때 널리 퍼져있었다고 하네요. 그런데 이 가사 말이 너무 재미있어서 덧붙입니다. 장난스런 이 가사를 염두에 두고 변주곡을 듣는 게 상상력이 더 요동치는 듯 해서요.

 

Ah ! vous dirai-je, maman,        아, 엄마에게 말해야겠다.

Ce qui cause mon tourment.      내가 왜 힘든지.

Papa veut que je raisonne,        아빠는 이유를 말하라는데

Comme une grande personne.    마치 (내가) 다 큰 어른인 것처럼(말이지).

Moi, je dis que les bonbons       말하자면, 내겐 사탕이

Valent mieux que la raison.       이유보다 훨씬 좋아.

Twinkle, Twinkle, little star,

How I wonder what you are!

Then the trav'ller in the dark,

Thanks you for your tiny spark,

He could not see which way to go,

If you did not twinkle so.

 

In the dark blue sky you keep,

And often thro' my curtains peep,

For you never shut your eye,

Till the sun is in the sky.

 

'Tis your bright and tiny spark,

Lights the trav'ller in the dark :

Tho' I know not what you are,

Twinkle, twinkle, little star.
